To become a Shopify partner, sign up for the Shopify Partner Program at partners.shopify.com and pick the work you'll do: build stores for merchants as an agency or freelancer, build apps or themes, or refer merchants as an affiliate. It's one program with several paths, and Shopify says it paid partners $1.3B in 2025. The money comes from different places depending on the path, so choose by how you plan to earn, not by the badge.

PartnersWatch isn't affiliated with Shopify. Facts below come from Shopify's partner page as listed in our directory, last checked October 2026. Shopify doesn't publish a single commission figure on that page, so we don't quote one. Check current payout terms inside the partner dashboard.

One program, four ways to earn

Program Partner types Terms Model
Shopify Agency, Integrator / MSP, Affiliate On request —

The Shopify Partner Program lists agencies, integrators, affiliates and referral partners. In practice that's four kinds of business:

Path What you do Where the money comes from
Agency or freelancer Build, migrate and run stores for merchants Your own project and retainer fees, plus referral payouts when merchants you bring sign up
App developer Build apps for the Shopify App Store App subscriptions and charges, minus Shopify's share
Theme developer Design themes merchants buy Theme sales
Affiliate or referrer Send new merchants to Shopify through content Referral commission per qualifying merchant

What partners get: APIs, docs and CLI tools, a developer community forum, the Built for Shopify program for apps, and partner events.

Path 1: Shopify agency partner

This is where most "Shopify partner" searches end up. You're a freelancer or studio that builds stores. Signing up as a partner gives you a partner dashboard, the ability to create stores for clients and hand them over, and a way to get credited when those merchants start paying.

What to do in your first month

  1. Create your partner account and fill out the business profile properly. Merchants and Shopify both look at it.
  2. Build one store you can show off. Use it as your portfolio and testing ground for apps and themes.
  3. Bring your existing clients in through your partner account so the referral is attributed to you. Merchants who sign up on their own before you're involved usually can't be credited later.
  4. Pick a niche. "We build Shopify stores" is a crowded pitch. "We migrate WooCommerce apparel brands to Shopify" gets calls.

The trap

Agencies sometimes treat the partner payout as income and price their builds too low to win work. Referral money is a bonus, not your margin. Price the build as if the payout didn't exist.

Path 2: app and theme developers

If you build, the partner program is how you get into the App Store and the theme store. The Built for Shopify program is a quality bar for apps that meet Shopify's standards. It's worth aiming for if you want visibility in the App Store.

A practical note from watching app developers: the apps that survive pair a narrow, painful merchant problem with a clean onboarding flow. Back-in-stock alerts, bundles and inventory sync are boring categories, and they make real money.

You can see how those app makers run their own affiliate programs, which shows you what merchants will tolerate on price:

Program Partner types Terms Model
Fast Bundle Affiliate, Referral partner 25% lifetime recurring commission Recurring
Notify Me! Affiliate, Referral partner 50% for six months, then 25% for life Recurring
Katana Cloud Inventory Agency, Referral partner, Integrator / MSP Revenue sharing (rate not stated) Revenue share
Gorgias Affiliate, Agency, Integrator / MSP 20% of all referral payments for the first two years, higher at upper tiers Recurring
Postscript Agency, Referral partner, Integrator / MSP Monthly commission for the first 12 months of each referral Recurring
Rokt Aftersell Agency, Affiliate, Referral partner On request —
  • Fast Bundle pays 25% lifetime recurring on referred Shopify merchants.
  • Notify Me! pays 50% for six months, then 25% for life.
  • Gorgias pays 20% of referral payments for the first two years, higher at upper tiers.
  • Postscript pays monthly commission for each referral's first 12 months.

Path 3: Shopify affiliate

If you run a blog, a YouTube channel or a course about starting an online store, the affiliate route pays you when people you refer become paying merchants. Shopify doesn't list a flat rate on the partner page we index, so get the current terms from the program itself before you build content around a number.

Honest take: Shopify alone is a thin affiliate business. One referral pays once. Merchants then go on to spend for years on apps, email, SMS, helpdesk and inventory. Many of those apps pay recurring commission. The affiliates who do well send readers to Shopify and to the stack around it:

Which path should you pick?

If clients already pay you to build sites, go agency. If you write code and want product revenue, go apps. If you have an audience of would-be store owners, go affiliate, and plan to promote the app stack too. You can switch or add paths later inside the same partner account, so don't overthink the first choice.

Shopify vs other commerce partner programs

If your clients don't all fit Shopify, these are the nearest alternatives in our directory:

Program Partner types Terms Model
WooCommerce Affiliate, Agency Up to 30% on first paid purchase, 10% on returning customers One-time
Wix Agency, Referral partner 20%+ revenue share on every Wix Studio Premium site Revenue share
Squarespace Agency, Referral partner On request —
  • WooCommerce (Automattic) pays up to 30% on a customer's first paid purchase and 10% on returning customers, with a 30-day cookie.
  • Wix Studio pays a 20%+ revenue share on every Wix Studio Premium site.
  • Squarespace Circle is open to Squarespace customers who build sites professionally. Silver is free, Gold and Platinum need active subscriptions, and Experts status needs 8 sites a year.

The difference with Shopify is scale: more apps, more merchants and more work for agencies. That's why the Shopify partner ecosystem is also the most crowded.

Mistakes that cost Shopify partners money

  • Letting clients open their own store first. If the merchant signs up directly, getting the referral credited afterwards is hard. Start the store from your partner account.
  • Signing up as an affiliate when you're really an agency. You'll miss the store-building tools.
  • Building generic apps. Shopify's ecosystem is already full of them. Pick a problem merchants are actually paying to fix.
  • Ignoring the app layer as income. Every store you build runs on a stack of apps you chose. Joining those apps' partner programs is often worth more than the Shopify payout itself.

More on getting accepted generally: how to join a partner program. Agencies comparing ecosystems: agency partner programs.

FAQ

How do I become a Shopify partner?

Sign up free at partners.shopify.com, complete your business profile, and choose your path: building stores for merchants, building apps or themes, or referring merchants. You get a partner dashboard, developer tools and access to the partner community.

Is the Shopify Partner Program free?

Yes. Joining the Shopify Partner Program is free. Your costs are your own time and tools.

How much do Shopify partners make?

It depends on the path. Agencies earn mostly from their own build and retainer fees, app developers from app revenue, and affiliates from referral commission. Shopify says it paid partners $1.3B in 2025. It doesn't publish a single commission rate on the partner page we list.

What's the difference between a Shopify partner and a Shopify affiliate?

Affiliate is one way to be a partner. Affiliates refer merchants through content and earn per referral. Agency, app and theme partners build things for merchants and earn mainly from that work.

Does Shopify have an agency partner program?

Yes. Agencies and freelancers join the same Shopify Partner Program and use the partner dashboard to create and transfer client stores and get credited for merchants they bring.

What is Built for Shopify?

It's a Shopify program for apps that meet its quality standards. It's part of what app developers get through the partner program.

What are good alternatives to the Shopify affiliate program?

Apps in the Shopify ecosystem often pay recurring commission: Fast Bundle (25% lifetime), Notify Me! (50% then 25% for life), Omnisend (20% for up to 24 months). Outside Shopify, WooCommerce pays up to 30% on a first purchase.
